Research facilities

One mission, two campuses
Scientists at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), our current funding priority, conduct their work at two campuses in London, UK. These two campuses represent the culture of the ICR – a rich history punctuated by breakthrough achievements.
The Chester Beatty Laboratories
Situated just west of central London, the Chester Beatty Laboratories (CBL) are in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The traditional Edwardian exterior of CBL belies the state of art research facilities within. Among other facilities, CBL houses the ICR’s supercomputing, robotic microscopy and mass spectrometry laboratories. These are being used for a unique initiative to study the biological origins and manifestations of cancer, progressing understanding of how drugs can successfully treat networks of cancer cells.
The Sutton Campus

Unlike the single building at CBL, the Sutton Campus contains several modern buildings spread across the English countryside. Sutton lies approximately 10 miles south of London, making it one of the southernmost of the London boroughs. The Sutton campus hosts a majority of ICR’s drug development operation. This essential ICR department demonstrates the multidisciplinary approach of the Institute, bringing together chemistry, medical imaging, microscopy, and clinical trials in a central location.
Both campuses are located adjacent to the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, a hospital whose unique partnership with the ICR forms Europe’s largest Comprehensive Cancer Center.
