Funding priorities

How does the ICR Global Foundation select funding priorities?

The ICR Global Foundation supports cancer research at world class institutions that exhibit three key criteria: Excellence, Education and Efficiency.

Excellence – leading the world in lifesaving research across key disciplines, exhibited by a track record of achievement and exceptional peer reviews

Education – an academic ethos in which scientists develop the next generation of top researchers and focus on patient results over profitability

Efficiency – allocating at least 90% of revenues directly to cancer research, with results outweighing spending relative to other institutions

Can you give examples of projects or institutions funded by the ICR Global Foundation?

As decided by its Directors, the ICR Global Foundation’s current funding priority is the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The ICR is one of the top four cancer research institutions in the world, and a recognized world leader in cancer genetics and drug development.

General

Why was the ICR Global Foundation created?

The ICR Global Foundation was created to enable philanthropic Americans and others to efficiently fund world-class cancer research. The research funded by the Global Foundation holds the promise of moving cancer from a fatal disease to a manageable one. Many organizations and hospitals provide direct services to cancer patients. A few select institutions examine the root causes of the disease and use their understanding to develop lifesaving treatments. The Global Foundation is working to ensure that the most effective and efficient of these elite research institutions have the funding they need to sustain and advance their work.

What is cancer?

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) defines cancer as diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.
Cancer is not just one disease but many diseases. There are more than 100 different types of cancer. Most cancers are named for the organ or type of cell in which they start - for example, cancer that begins in the colon is called colon cancer; cancer that begins in basal cells of the skin is called basal cell carcinoma.

Why support cancer research?

Across the world, there are more than 12 million cancer cases diagnosed each year. In the United States alone, nearly 1.5 million cases of cancer were diagnosed in 2007. That same year, 560,000 Americans lost their lives to cancer. (Source: World Health Organization and American Cancer Society)

Cancer research is the primary vehicle by which cancer will move from being a life-threatening disease to a manageable one. Supporting cancer research will save lives – perhaps even your own.
